Lab-grown teeth could offer alternative to fillings and implants – Jess Thomson

When it comes to regrowing teeth, several big players come to mind: sharks, crocodiles, even elephants can regrow their molars up to six times. But after replacing our baby teeth, we humans only have one set. If we ever damage or lose a tooth, we have to rely on artificial filings or implants. But what if people could regrow their teeth like sharks? No more implants or fillings needed, just natural replacements. This may sound like science fiction, but groundbreaking advancements may soon bring lab-grown teeth into reality.

Stem Cells in Hydrogel Environments

Scientists at King’s College London, working with Imperial College London, have made a key discovery for growing teeth in a lab. A team of researchers led by Xuechen Zhang have found a way to grow mini-teeth, or tooth organoids, using a special soft, jelly-like material called a hydrogel. This new hydrogel replicates the natural extracellular matrix and is the ideal environment for teeth to grow on their own in vitro. The hydrogel allows stem cells to communicate with each other, sending signals that cause those stem cells to differentiate into enamel, dentin, and pulp cells.

Future Challenges

Now that scientists have successfully created the environment needed to grow teeth, they are faced with the next challenge: getting them from the lab into the patient’s mouth. Options include transplanting immature tooth buds for in-mouth maturation or fully growing teeth in the lab before implantation. Challenges like vascularization and immune compatibility remain, but early results suggest seamless integration with jaw tissues, potentially reducing rejection rates compared to traditional implants.

Global Innovations Sparking Hope for Tooth Regrowth

This isn’t just wishful thinking or a one-off case either. Similar advances are popping up worldwide: Japanese scientists are trialing a drug to regrow teeth by 2030, and Tufts University even grew human-like teeth in pigs!

While we probably won’t be regrowing endless rows of replacement teeth like sharks anytime soon, it’s a promising move toward more natural dental solutions. For now, AdDent Inc. is here with innovative products to keep smiles strong until this future arrives.
